Following reports that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 could abandon its single player campaign in favor of a battle royale mode, an anonymous source with knowledge of EA’s DICE studio is claiming the developer is testing a battle royale mode for Battlefield 5.
Per Venturebeat, DICE is putting together a prototype for a battle royale mode in Battlefield 5 that could compete with the likes of PUBG and Fortnite, two of the most popular battle royale games on the market. Battlefield 5’s version is said to be similar to that of PUBG and Fortnite, with 100 players dropping onto a map and fighting until only one person or team is left.
It’s unclear if DICE will do anything different to push the genre forward or if this is just a ploy to capture some of the rapidly growing battle royale market. It’s speculated that if the mode is green lit, Battlefield: Battle Royale could end up as a part of some sort of free update for the game, perhaps arriving after launch. EA has typically provided its Battlefield games with tons of post-launch content in the forms of regular expansions and downloadable content, both as a mix of free and paid-for.
Battlefield 5 is expected to arrive later in 2018, and a recent leak suggested it’s heading back to World War 2. We’ll hopefully learn more in the coming weeks leading up to E3.
