This year's weaker than usual Black Friday sales is not the only problem Electronic Arts has to deal with right now, as
Battlefield V got off to a rough start with launch sales down more than 63 percent compared with 2016's
Battlefield 1 in the United Kingdom.
Battlefield V also had to settle for No. 4 last week, behind EA’s own
FIFA 19, Call of Duty: Black Ops IV and
Red Dead Redemption 2.
Every cloud's got a silver lining, as
Battlefield V did manage to perform better in its launch week that big-budget titles such as Ubisoft's
Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Bethesda Softworks' panned
Fallout 76. As a reminder,
Fallout 76's physical sales are in fact down 82% from
Fallout 4 in the UK, but you should remember that retail sales aren't saying much about overall performance in this day and age.
Interestingly enough,
Battlefield V is the game that sold best on Xbox One, as Microsoft's console accounted for 50 per cent of the game's sales. Considering that the
Battlefield series is known as a PC-friendly franchise, that's quite an achievement. What might have affected the game's sales was EA's mind-boggling decision to give
Battlefield V different release dates for different gaming systems.
Enter mankind’s greatest conflict with Battlefield V as the series goes back to its roots with a never-before-seen portrayal of World War 2.
