The Battlefield 6 team has finally addressed the two Season 5 skins that players have been memeing all week. In a statement posted to the official Battlefield Comms account on X yesterday (October 16th), Battlefield Studios confirmed that the "SECUTY" patch on a McNeil skin is a typo that will be fixed next month. The Midnight Mirage skin with five pistols strapped to it is staying exactly as it is, because the team says that one was on purpose.
Both cosmetics arrived with the launch of Season 5 earlier this week (October 13th), and they were all over social media within hours. The Battlefield Intel account was one of the first to point out the typo on the McNeil skin's patch, which spells "security" without the "ri." Check it out below:
The same account had already posted the Midnight Mirage skin a couple of hours earlier, asking who approved it. The operator has one pistol on his hip and four more strapped across his chest.
Players Point To AI
Seeing both skins land in the same update led a lot of players to accuse the team of using generative AI to make them. One player, MrQueper, replied to the Battlefield accounts saying, "AI slop or not, the lack of quality control this go around is honestly embarrassing. 5 pistols on an operator? Spelling errors???" and asked the team to "go back to grounded skins." Streamer Kazuki SilverVT wrote that the five-pistol skin in the battle pass felt like "kinda a slap in the face on ''grounded'' gameplays," and said the AI talk made them not want to play.
Not everyone was upset. Some players thought the five pistols made a weird kind of sense. "whats wrong with carrying 5 pistols anyway i mean he's in a battlefield after all switching to a pistol is easier than switching mags," one player argued, while another simply joked, "Switching to your secondary is faster than reloading."
What The Developers Said
The response from Battlefield Comms opened by acknowledging the "conversation, memes, and candid feedback" around the new skins. "You called it out clearly, and we hear your concerns," the team wrote. Here is the full statement:
The fix for the McNeil patch was already planned for the Season 5 Phase 2 update, but the team admitted that leaving a known error live without saying anything "creates confusion and erodes trust." It said it is reviewing how it communicates known visual bugs, and that it is looking at its internal processes to figure out how the issues happened and how to tighten quality control.
Midnight Mirage got a very different answer. The team called it "an intentional creative concept" and "a nod to over-the-top action movie tropes where an operative inexplicably has another backup weapon strapped to every spare inch of gear." It did admit the skin could look like a mistake when it came out right next to the typo. The statement did not address the AI accusations or explain how the typo got through in the first place.
Skins have been a regular topic in the community since Battlefield 6 launched last October, with a big part of the player base pushing the team to keep operators looking like believable soldiers. That history is a big reason two odd-looking skins in one battle pass drew so much attention, even though only one of them turned out to be an error.
What Else Season 5 Brings
Season 5: Siege of Vegas is the first season of the game's second year, and EA is calling it the biggest season yet. It launched with two new maps, Vegas Strip and Area 51, along with the Rapid Royale mode for REDSEC and four new weapons, the Mk 24 assault rifle, the RSPR SMG, the Z84M LMG, and the ELR-40 sniper rifle. A Dead Space crossover called the Convergence Event is also arriving this Halloween, built around a mysterious Marker found beneath Area 51.
The Casino Heist update, which should bring the McNeil fix, arrives next month (November 10th) with the new European Casino map. The Frozen Aces update follows in December (December 8th) with Platoons, a Server Browser, updated versions of Blackwell Fields and New Sobek City, and the B-81 Cavalry. Anyone who has not played yet can also try the full game for free through the Battlefield 6 Full Game Trial, which runs through Monday (October 19th).
Do you think the five-pistol Midnight Mirage skin is a fun action movie joke, or should Battlefield 6 stick to grounded military cosmetics?
