Gearbox's Randy Pitchford stopped by The Game Awards to debut the official first look trailer for Borderlands 4. The highly anticipated game was first announced back in August with a teaser trailer, but we haven't seen or heard much about the game since then.
The newest trailer still doesn't have many actual narrative details, but it does give us our first look at the four new playable Vault Hunters as well as some of the new locations you'll be visiting and all of the action mayhem that awaits on the planet of Kairos.
"Get your first look at the four new Vault Hunters as they tear their way through gorgeous new environments brimming with deadly enemies," the trailer's description reads. "Following the cataclysmic arrival of Pandora's moon, Kairos is a powder keg ready to explode. Gather your friends, gear up on loot, and take the fight to the authoritarian Timekeeper."
Borderlands 4 is a mayhem-fueled looter shooter, jam-packed with billions of weapons, outrageous enemies, and intense co-op action. Break free from a dangerous hidden planet as one of four new badass Vault Hunters.
Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. Now a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across the planet.
Ignite a resistance and blast your way through mechanical monstrosities, bloodthirsty bandits, and vicious beasts. Amass an arsenal of death-dealing firepower to wreak havoc as you tear your way across Kairos.
Fight solo or in co-op with up to three other players in this immense sci-fi adventure, packed with free-form combat and exploration, pulse-pounding boss fights, infinitely varied loot drops, and an eclectic cast of unforgettable characters new and old.
Gearbox also confirmed that we'll be getting our first look at Borderlands 4 gameplay in early 2025. It will provide a closer look at the sci-fi adventure, including free-form combat and exploration, as well as "pulse-pounding boss fights, infinitely varied loot drops, and an eclectic cast of unforgettable characters new and old."
Borderlands 4 will be the first mainline entry in the series since 2019's Borderlands 3, and the story seems to link directly with that game's ending. Borderlands is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The series is known for its loot-driven multiplayer co-op gameplay and sense of humor, although the latter was missing form this trailer. Hopefully, the gameplay trailer next year will give us a better sense of the game's tone.
Borderlands 4 will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
