During Sony's State of Play presentation last night, Gearbox announced that Borderlands 4 will be released on September 23, 2025. In announcing the game's launch, however, Gearbox simultaneously narrowed the release window for Grand Theft Auto 6.
Borderlands 4 is being published by 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive. It just so happens that Take-Two Interactive also owns Rockstar Games, the developer and publisher of GTA 6.
Rockstar hasn't announced a specific release date for Grand Theft Auto 6, but the developer and Take-Two both insist that the game will launch sometime in the Fall 2025 window. In the United States, Fall runs from September through November.
Take-Two is unlikely to want its two publishers to cannibalize the sales of each other's games, so with Borderlands 4 releasing in September, it would seemingly make sense that Grand Theft Auto 6 launches in October or November of this year.
Of course, this is all assuming that everything stays on track and there are no setbacks with either game. And right now, there's no guarantee with GTA 6 as Rockstar is known for wanting to release the most polished product, especially for a game as big as this one.
In a recent interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick assured fans that the company feels "really good" about the Fall 2025 release window for GTA 6. However, he did acknowledge that there's "always a risk of slippage."
For now, it would seem that both Borderlands 4 and Grand Theft Auto 6 are both on track to release this Fall. Gearbox is readying a State of Play dedicated to the upcoming shooter, while fans are eagerly awaiting the next big announcement from Rockstar regarding GTA 6.
It's been over a year since Rockstar first shared the first Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer. While void of substantial details, the trailer confirmed the game's setting of Leonida, a fictional state based on Florida that serves as home to Vice City, a fictionalized version of Miami. It also seemingly confirmed the playable criminal duo of Lucia, the series' first main female protagonist since 2000, and her currently unnamed male partner. Beyond that, not much else is actually known about the game's story, other than it's said to have been inspired by Bonnie and Clyde.
Grand Theft Auto 6 figures to be the biggest game of this year, and likely of this console generation. So it would make sense that Rockstar wants to make sure it's as good as it can possibly be before committing to a release date.
