This week, Rockstar unexpectedly dropped the second trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6. Just days after announcing that the blockbuster had been pushed back to next year, the studio made good by giving us our best look at at the highly antcipated game. And it didn't disappoint.
The trailer for GTA 6 was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, with praise especially directed towards the game's visuals and graphics. Rockstar is known for its attention to detail and exceptinal worldbuilding, and GTA 6 looks like the developer's best work yet.
As of right now, Grand Theft Auto 6 has only been announced for consoles, but oftentimes developers capture footage for trailers on high-powered PCs. What we then see is some downgraded visuals when the game finally releases on consoles. That seemingly won't be the case for GTA 6 as what you saw in the trailer has been captured "entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5."
Shortly after the trailer was released, Rockstar took to social media to confirm that the GTA 6 Trailer #2 was captured on the PlayStation 5. The footage was also comprised of "equal parts gameplay and cutscenes."
Rockstar is renowned for creating cutscenes rendered in real-time using their game engine rather than relying on pre-rendered cinematics, allowing for a seamless integration between gameplay and narrative sequences. If you look closely, you can probably figure out which scenes are cutscenes and which are gameplay; but, it looks incredible and you can see how by rendering them in real-time, the characters, environments, and lighting remain consistent between gameplay and narrative moments. It improves the overall immersion and storytelling.
In addition to all the new footage, Trailer #2 revealed an official story synopsis and properly introduced us to the game's two playable protagoanists, Jason and Lucia.
"Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them," the description reads. "But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida — forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive."
Following the delay, Grand Theft Auto 6 is now set to release on ay 26, 2026. It's only been announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, although it's likely to come to PC at some point after its launch.
