During today's PlayStation State of Play broadcast, Gearbox announced that Borderlands 4 will be released on September 23, 2025. The launch date was announced alongside an action-packed gameplay trailer that gives us our best look yet at the mayhem that awaits.
The adrenaline-fueled trailer is only a minute in length, but there's no shortage of wild action, outrageous loot, and wicked enemies. And if you're craving more after this, Gearbox has already confirmed there will be a speical Borderlands 4 deep dive State of Play coming this Spring.
Become an unstoppable force of battle, blasting through enemies with an all-new arsenal of outrageous weaponry, now even more BAJILLIONER! (Is that even a thing? Well, it is NOW.)
Explode each encounter with devastating Action Skills that unleash your Vault Hunter’s unique abilities.
Move across the Borderlands like never before—double jumping, gliding, dodging, fixed-point grappling, and more—dealing death from every direction.
"Borderlands 4 is our most ambitious game to date, giving you more looting and shooting Mayhem than ever before," said Gearbox Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Randy Varnell on the PlayStation Blog. "Our team has been kicking so much ass, and we cannot wait to share it with you!"
Back at The Game Awards show in December, Gearbox showed off a first look at Borderlands 4, showcasing the four new Vault Hunters ready to tear their way through the new environments on the planet of Kairos. Gearbox still hasn't revealed much about the game's story, although we do know it's a sequel to Borderlands 3 and will involve leading some sort of resistance against the Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high.
"Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. Now a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across the planet," Gearbox teases. "Ignite a resistance and blast your way through mechanical monstrosities, bloodthirsty bandits, and vicious beasts. Amass an arsenal of death-dealing firepower to wreak havoc as you tear your way across Kairos."
Borderlands 4 is the fifth main entry in the franchise, and the first since 2019's Borderlands 3. Judging from the gameplay above, it very much seems like many of the franchise's core elements and gameplay mechanics will be returning, including customizable skill trees, powerful Action Skills, a ridiculous amount of weapons and loot, heart-pounding boss fights, and a cast of intriguing characters brimming with personality. Of course, it's possible there are some wrinkles and surprises up Gearbox's sleeve, so we'll just have to wait until the State of Play in the Spring.
