Two years ago, we learned that People Can Fly, the creators of Painkiller, Bulletstorm, Gears of War: Judgement and Fortnite's Battle Royale mode, is working on a first-person shooter set in a completely original universe. Since that announcement, PCF has confirmed that this new IP is produced and will be published by Square Enix – and it looks like the company's involvement is even bigger than we thought.
According to People Can Fly CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski, this project is the only new video game they are currently working on – meaning that all three PCF studios (two based in Poland in Warsaw and Rzeszów and one in Newcastle, UK) and 170 PCF employees are developing the title simultaneously.
In a recent interview with DualShockers, Wojciechowski said that People Can Fly’s “ambition around this game and the scope of the game grew over time, so it is a much bigger, much more ambitious project than what we pitched back in 2015.” While the scope of the project has rapidly expanded, in the CEO's personal opinion “it is the same exact idea that we had back then” when pitching in 2015.
As for their partnership, the CEO “can only say good things about the cooperation with Square Enix,” and revealed that there is a “dedicated team at Square Enix that is helping us with our development.” Sebastian also said Square is helping them “design-wise, tech-wise, production-wise, and art-wise.”
Considering that People Can Fly has been working on that first-person shooter for nearly four years, we should expect an official announcement of the title in the relatively near future, as Square Enix's latest video game, the long-delayed Kingdom Hearts III, launches today on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
