After months of leaks and rumors, Activision has officially confirmed Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War as this year's Call of Duty game. The confirmation came by way of an unlisted YouTube trailer on the official Call of Duty channel that was discovered after an elaborate ARG.
The video itself doesn't feature any gameplay but confirms the Cold War setting inspired by the geopolitical conflict between the United States and the USSR. It also sets a chilling tone for what looks like a very intriguing and relevant campaign involving international espionage and infiltration.
The video is actually comprised of real footage of the period while KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov explains -- in a real interview that took place -- the tools of ideological subversion. After going through the steps needed to destroy a country from the inside out, it serves as a chilling warning to the United States.
The trailer also warns "Know your history or be doomed to repeat it," suggesting that the campaign is modern day take on the Cold War. The video specifically makes reference to a soviet spy codenamed "perseus" who has infiltrated western intelligence. With his real identity and codename still a mystery to this day, it's likely that the campaign will take place in a modern day setting during the final stages of the "active measures" that were set in motion decades ago.
The worldwide reveal for Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War will take place on August 26.
