The next Call of Duty instalment, developed by Infinity Ward, will be a follow-up to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare — that much seems clear. It will be the second entry in the modern reboot of the classic subseries of the same name and, thus, feature reimaginings of such characters as Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, and Ghost.
Last month, a reputable leaker put forth some information that they had ascertained about the upcoming instalment such as the themes of the campaign mode, weapons that won't be included, and the status of console exclusivity — find out more about all that here.
Now another reputable leaker has come forth with supposed info about the latter. According to industry insider and reputable leaker, Tom Henderson, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be coming to both current and previous generation consoles — which is to say the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
However, Henderson stipulates that the next instalment will likely be the final entry in the first-person shooter series to be split between the two console generations. It seems Activision intends to leave the eighth generation of consoles behind. The aforementioned other leaker did mention that Activision intends to encourage players to make the jump to current generation consoles as the generational difference between the two versions of the upcoming game will apparently be "significant."
Though, naturally, Activision's plan does rely on what the market conditions are like at the time. For instance, if Call of Duty sales are particularly low, Activision may want the previous generation of consoles included as to pick up more sales. Only time will tell how this one will play out.
