Call of Duty: Warzone has been available for almost two months now. It's a free-to-play battle royale game tied to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. However, since it's free and somewhat separate from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, many players are curious how it will be handled once the next Call of Duty instalment rolls around.
By the sounds of it, Call of Duty: Warzone will persist long after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's lifespan comes to an end. Taylor Kurosaki, narrative director at Infinity Ward, recently told GamerGen that Call of Duty: Warzone has challenged the studios responsible for Call of Duty as well as Activision to rethink their content release strategy.
Asked about the next instalment in the long-running first-person shooter franchise; Kurosaki said that Call of Duty: Warzone will be the "through line that connects" future instalments and the various sub-franchises (such as Modern Warfare, Black Ops, and whatever else the future may hold).
Exactly how the studios will handle Call of Duty: Warzone is still unclear, however. For instance, will the baton (Call of Duty: Warzone) be passed to Treyarch once they take over the franchise with the next instalment? Will it remain at Infinity Ward? Will it be like Call of Duty: Mobile (a mixture of the different sub-franchises)?
Nonetheless, you can check out the quote from Kurosaki below:
We’re in kind of uncharted territories here. Call of Duty has been on a very regular cadence for many many years, and Warzone has made us rethink exactly how best to release new content and how to integrate it. Call of Duty is a genre in itself, there are different branches in the Call of Duty tree, but they’re all connected in some ways. Warzone will be the through line that connects all of the different various sub-franchises of Call of Duty.
"It’s going to be really cool to see how the different sub-franchises sort of come in and out of focus, but Warzone will be the one constant," Kurosaki explained.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone are both out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
