Gamers enjoying Destiny 2 on current-gen consoles will have nothing to fear as we make the leap into the next generation of gaming. Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2 will be available on next-gen platforms.
Bungie was vague in its announcement, but mentioning "next-gen platforms" seems to suggest that Destiny 2 will be released on both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The tweet is certainly exciting but there are still plenty of unanswered questions. The biggest one being if your Guardians will carry over from current to next-gen. One would assume some sort of cross-save functionality will be present because it's unlikely players will want to start from scratch.
Another big question is whether or not existing Destiny 2 players will have to purchase another copy of the game for Xbox Series X or PS5. Microsoft has been touting the Xbox Series X Smart Delivery program, which allows gamers to buy an Xbox One version of a game and get the Xbox Series X version free of charg. However, it's up to the publisher to decide if they want to participate in the program. With Destiny 2 no longer under the draconian control of Activision, it's possible that Bungie could decide to be gamer-friendly and allow the free upgrade.
Unfortunately, we have to wait for more details. It's possible, given the PlayStation exclusivity deal that has been in place with Destiny 2, that Bungie is waiting to make a more formal showing during a PlayStation event. Sony has yet to formally unveil the PlayStation 5 and there's no word on when we can expect to see it.
Destiny 2 is currently available for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The Xbox Series X and PS5 are slated to launch this holiday season and hopefully Destiny 2 will be there on day one.
