The universe of
Overwatch is filled to the brim with potential, some of which has been utilised brilliantly by those behind the popular first-person-shooter game as well as its lore and characters. However, the president of Blizzard recently teased that they've only scratched the surface of what they have planned for the
Overwatch IP.
J. Allen Brack recently did an interview with
Game Informer in which he teases that the Overwatch IP could potentially house many games of varying genres. This is particularly interesting when coupled with the statements from Brack and Activision wherein they stated that they have more
games in development than ever before and that
they have big plans for the
Overwatch franchise respectively.
We also think that there are a lot of different types of games that can exist within the IP’s that we have. If we think about the Overwatch IP for example, we think about the Overwatch IP as being extremely large and extremely all-encompassing. Overwatch, the game people experience today, is just being a very small part of what that IP could be.
"We think that a lot of these franchises have the ability to have lots of different types of games, lots of different types of experiences," Brack explained that the sentiment doesn't just apply to the Overwatch franchise. The Blizzard president then explained that they also want to explore new IPs:
“Having said that, it was 18 years between the introduction of Diablo, which is the last Blizzard IP, and the release of Overwatch. That’s a long time to go without creating a new franchise. So we want to create more games in our franchises and we do want to think about new franchises as well.”
As the interview went on, Brack further talks about a supposed expansion of the Overwatch franchise, comparing it to World of Warcraft, wherein the franchise could grow beyond its current form of a team-shooter and span multiple genres of games as well as different types of media.
