Overwatch 2 was officially announced at BlizzCon 2019. The sequel will feature competitive multiplayer, as its predecessor did, but also introduce new PvE content such as story and co-operative missions.
Overwatch 2 will feature an all-new engine which allows for even more visually and functionally impressive feats. For example, co-director Aaron Keller recently revealed that multiplayer maps will almost be twice as big as those of the first game. But not only that, unlike the static maps that featured in
Overwatch, they will feature dynamic weather, lightning, and explosions.
Here's what Keller explained during his
PlayStation Blog interview:
"The maps are almost 2X larger than regular Overwatch maps. They’ve also got way more advanced technology to show dynamic weather, lightning, explosions, and more," said Keller.
"We like to say that our maps are almost another character in helping with Overwatch 2 storytelling."
In the same interview, the game's co-director also explained how the progression system will work this time around —
