Overwatch will finally be coming to the Nintendo Switch in just over a week's time. The popular multiplayer shooter has been available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC for three years now.
Only now that
Overwatch is coming to the Switch is Blizzard Entertainment beginning to humor the idea of cross-platform play —
though they, at first, shot down the idea of such a feature being implemented. The concept of being able to play alongside those who aren't playing on the same platform as you wasn't as big of a thing back when the competitive game initially released.
Wes Yanagi, a producer of
Overwatch, recently participated in an interview with
Gamespot in which cross-platform play was discussed. At first, Yanagi iterated that implementing a feature which allows different consoles to connect is more difficult than it seems.
"Cross-play is something that would definitely be compelling for players, and as a player, I would love to see it happen. The truth is that implementing cross-play for Overwatch is more difficult than people realize."
The producer continued, revealing that Blizzard are actively looking into figuring out how to make
Overwatch cross-play compatible — but they unfortunately don't have any exciting breakthroughs to share right now.
"We are exploring how to bring this to Overwatch, but do not have anything to share at this time."
