Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed today that Advanced Warfare has now crossed $1 billion in sales. Treyarch Studios will also be creating this years Call of Duty set to release in the fall. Activision has been creating a Call of Duty game every year since we could all remember. Here is the big question, is it time to take a step back?
Every year it feels like I'm playing the same game. Yes, there are different story lines, different weapons, but I feel like there is something missing. Would it kill them (maybe in the pockets) to take their time and create a masterpiece instead of force feeding everyone a new Call of Duty every year? The Battlefield series took a step back and created Battlefield Hardline. It has a fast pace cops vs robbers feel, it is refreshing and it is easy to get excited about it.
Imagine a huge open world Call of Duty with killer graphics (Battlefield has been kicking CoD's butt in this department), where you have to make different choices that have certain consequences. Let it be a strategic first person shooter. If you decide to do x then something happens at y. The good guys don't win every battle in warfare. Make a mission where you have to defend a town with little ammo and little backup. It would make for one hell of a mission in an open world Call of Duty, especially if it was multiplayer!
Here is the good news, Treyarch could pull this off. Black Ops was great. There is probably people who'd disagree, but this studio can do it. Make the game a huge project and fans will respond to the call. It is time to take a step back and stop regurgitating the same similarities year after year. Show something that hasn't been done before that is new and exciting! If they do, they'll have my pre-order!
