Something strange is happening in
Fortnite. Earlier today, players noticed portals appearing inside the battle royale game. These gates were very similar to the ones seen in Netflix's
Stranger Things, prompting speculation that some sort of crossover event is coming with the premiere the show's third season on July 4.
Those theories were correct as both Netflix and Epic Games confirmed that a
Fortnite x Stranger Things collaborative event is coming. At this point, not much is known about the event.
The
portals started popping up today in
Fortnite's Mega Mall, which is also home to Scoops Ahoy, the name of the ice cream parlor in
Stranger Things Season 3's Starcourt Mall. Entering the portals don't take you to the upside down, though, but instead teleport you to another location within the mall itself. It's possible that these portals could lead somewhere else once the event goes live - presumably sometime after the show's premiere on July 4 at midnight.
The game also has consumable ice creams that restore five health when eaten, but there's most likely more to the crossover than just a few portals and minor themed additions.
As pointed out by
Fortnite Insider, datamining previously leaked the
Fortnite x Stranger Things crossover, revealing cosmetic character skins for the Demogorgon and Chief Hopper. It's possible that more
Stranger Things themed cosmetics will be added to the store as well.
Stranger Things Season 3 premieres on Netflix on July 4. We will presumably get more details about this event after the show's return.
