Last week, Sony surprised everyone when they announced an about-face when it comes to cross-play with other gaming platforms. While still light on details, it appears that Sony is at least willing to support cross-play with various third-party games, starting with an open beta for Epic Games' popular battle royale game
Fortnite.
The excitement of this news understandably has PlayStation gamers questioning what other games will have cross-play enabled on PS4. It sounds like many companies are interested, including Sony's competitor Microsoft, who owns the popular sandbox game
Minecraft.
In a statement issued to Windows Central, expressed a desire to work with Sony when it comes to cross-play for
Minecraft on PlayStation 4.
We believe in giving gamers the opportunity to play the games they want with the people they want. Whether that means working with our partners to deliver cross-network play with games like 'Rocket League' and 'Fortnite' or enabling cross-device play with the likes of Minecraft, we are supportive of new scenarios that enable more people to play and have fun together while gaming. We would love to bring players on PlayStation 4 into our Minecraft ecosystem as well but have nothing further to share at this time.
Microsoft introduced cross-play to
Minecraft with the
Better Together Update. It allows all players across Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, mobile, and VR to play together online. It's worth noting that Microsoft requests that anyone playing
Minecraft Bedrock Edition sign into an Xbox LIVE account, which Sony may have a problem with on its PlayStation platform. Sony allows third-party logins for EA Sports and Ubisoft titles, but Xbox is more of a direct competitor.
