A recent report has revealed that despite battle-royale Fortnite's unbelievable popularity, it's still nothing in comparison to the gaming giant that is Minecraft.
Back in 2014 when Microsoft bought Mojang and thereby Minecraft for $2.5 billion, many believed that this would be the beginning of countless sequels and spinoffs in effort to collect as much money as possible, given the game's immense size. Well, four years later and only one spinoff currently announced, Microsoft's Minecraft boss Helen Chiang recently told Business Insider that a supposed Minecraft 2 isn't going to happen.
I really don't think that makes sense for Minecraft, given the community. It's something that always fractures the community. We're trying to keep our community together. That's why our updates our free. We don't want to ask [players] to move from Minecraft 1 to Minecraft 2. We want them to just enjoy Minecraft. And there's other ways that we can expand that are more meaningful and authentic to what we want to be, rather than just releasing another iteration in the way that most other franchises do.
That's a noble sentiment - especially given the surprising high population of the game. The same report reveals that Minecraft currently has more than 91 million monthly active players, while Fortnite has 78.3 million - that's a shocking 13 million difference and truly impressive given how the sandbox game first became available almost a decade ago.
What do you think of the statistics? Do you play Fortnite, Minecraft, or both? What do you think of Chiang's comments on the non-existent Minecraft sequel?
