After year's of requests by the community, Mojang will finally be implementing PlayStation VR support for Minecraft on PlayStation 4. Mojang's Roger Carpenter made the announcement on the PlayStation Blog on Monday and although he could not provide a specific date, he did say it would be sometime this month.
"Us Mojang folks have been bursting to say something about this for ages! PS VR support has actually been a planned PS4 feature since we got the thumbs-up from Sony to bring cross platform play and the Bedrock version to PlayStation 4. There was never any question of would we, just when," Carpenter wrote.
PS VR support will arrive via a free patch for the main Minecraft game that will be automatically downloaded for anyone who owns the game on PS4. Those with PS VR support will be able to access the new virtual reality functionality.
Minecraft will support both Immersive and Living Room modes on PS VR. Immersive mode is the more traditional VR experience, making it feel like you actually inside the world of Minecraft. Living Room mode puts you inside a virtual living room with Minecraft playing on a virtual screen in front of you. In either mode, you will use the DualShock 4 controller to perform all of your actions. It will still be the same full game with all of the content and features, only you'll be able to experience it in an all-new, fully-immersed way.
According to Carpenter, the Minecraft x PSVR experience is actually based on Minecraft VR tech developed years ago for other VR platforms. SkyBox Labs, with the help of Sony, was able to optimize and convert that tech for PS VR. Minecraft's PS VR support will arrive at some point this month.
