A decade ago Markus "Notch" Persson birthed
Minecraft and now the game is detaching itself from him. 2015 saw Notch sell the immensely popular game to Microsoft for the reasonable price of $2.5 billion. Notch himself hadn't worked on Minecraft since long before being bought out by the corporation.
The main menu of
Minecraft features some yellow splash-text which is typically selected at random. On occasion, this text will make reference to Notch, reading things like
"Made by Notch!",
"The Work of Notch!", and
"110313!" - that last one is the date on which Notch got married.
Well, the latest "snapshot" update to
Minecraft has removed any and all splash text relating to the game's original creator (via
Eurogamer). As of "snapshot 19w13a", Notch's name can only be found within the game's credits.
This change is likely on account of Notch becoming quite controversial on social media. Persson often gets caught up in Twitter feuds regarding politics and the like.
Just last week someone tweeted at Notch asking for his thoughts on
Minecraft's state in the current year. Persson responded with disapproval of what the game has become and the general direction that Microsoft is taking it - a notable change being the implementation of in-game currency: Minecoins.
Minecraft is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Mobile.
