At its core,
Dauntless is a free-to-play, co-op action RPG heavily inspired by Capcom's vastly successfully
Monster Hunter series (its last installment,
Monster Hunter World is the best-selling Capcom game of all time). Just like in that franchise,
Dauntless gives players a chance to kill enormous and grotesque monsters, harvest their parts, and use them to craft even better weapons to kill even bigger beasts.
Designed by former Riot Games developers Jesse Houston, Sean Bender and Robin Mayne,
Dauntless was first revealed during The Game Awards in December 2016. Two years later, Phoenix Labs proudly announced at the last week’s show that
Dauntless is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Epic Games store in April of 2019, as the game's open alpha was officially launched over a year ago.
While
Monster Hunter: World is currently available on all the aforementioned platforms (except for the Epic Games store), Phoenix Labs is not afraid of the might competition. According to Phoenix CEO Jesse Houston,
Dauntless differs itself by being tuned to a co-operative experience and using free-to-play mechanics, as "
the more AAA products that are coming into this genre, the wider it’s going to get."
