Back in the PS2 years, the arcade racing genre was hugely popular. Games like Rockstar San Diego's
Midnight Club and EA's
Need For Speed: Underground gained both critical and financial success. However, even today, there is one racing series that stands above the rest in the memories of racing fans. I am of course talking about the
Burnout franchise.
Developed by Criterion Games and published by the now defunct Acclaim, Burnout put players behind the wheel in frenetic races that had them careening in and out of oncoming traffic in the hopes of winning. It was a joy to play and satisfying to see your friends collide head on with a vehicle or get slammed off the road by an overly aggressive competitor.
Given the success of the games, it is difficult to understand why we haven't gotten any new instalments. This video, made by Gameranx, provides a succint insight into why that is the case. Check it out below and feel free to share your favorite recollections of the games in the comments section.
