Anthem is an online shared-world shooter and BioWare's first attempt at a "games-as-a-service.' This means the game will be continuously supported with content post-launch. This week we got our first look at what this content might entail.
Lead producer Ben Irving took to social media and posted an outline of BioWare's post-launch plans for
Anthem. It appears that at least three major expansions - dubbed "Acts" - are planned right now, with the potential for more in the future.
Act 01: Echoes of Reality is slated to arrive in March, which isn't long after
Anthem releases. Details are light, but it seems it will consist of three individual updates titled "Evolving World," "Stronger Together," and "The Cataclysm." We don't have specifics for what the individual updates will include, but BioWare teases new events, quality of life improvements, an expanded progression system, guilds and leaderboards, a new stronghold, additional rewards, and something called "the Cataclysm," which I assume will be a major in-game event.
As you can see, the two remaining Acts are still a mystery as the codex entry has yet to be unlocked.
In a world left unfinished by the gods, a shadowy faction threatens all of humankind. The only thing that stands between these villains and the ancient technology they covet are the Freelancers. Join up to three other players and assemble high-tech, hand-crafted, uniquely powerful exosuits. Explore vast ruins, battle deadly enemies, and claim otherworldly artifacts. With every mission, you and your Javelin exosuits grow in power. Fight the dangers of an ever-changing world. Rise united to defeat evil. Triumph as one.
Anthem is set to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via Origin) on February 22, 2019.
