CYBERPUNK 2077 Dev On How Much Control Players Have Over Their Character's Personality
As a sci-fi RPG, Cyberpunk 2077 promises to give players a number of ways to customize their character, but now the game's level designer has shed some light on how much of V's personality is predefined...
When CD Projekt Red released a nearly hour-long gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 in August, gamers were treated to a look at system that will enable players to create and customize their character, a system that included the ability to affect the protagonist's backstory.
However, while it's clear players will be able to customize the character V in a variety of ways, it's still a bit unclear how much player's will be able to impact V's personality, especially since Cybperpunk 2077 is meant to be narrative-focused.
Fortunately, the folks over at GamingBolt were able to get this question to level designer Miles Tost, who explains how V is not a blank canvas for us to customize however we like.
"You will determine how your character looks like and what kind of abilities they specialize in. Yes, V exists in a world we’ve set up for him/her. They’re a character who, growing up in our version of a cyberpunk world, was inevitably shaped by it. They are not a blank piece of paper — but in a story-driven game, which character ever is? Despite that, ultimately, it is up to you, the player, to gauge where your character’s moral compass leads and what decisions they make. The outcomes are very much in your hands — you can (and will) shape the story you experience."
As expected, when compared to CD Projekt Red's other creations—specifically Geralt from The Witcher series—it sounds like the protagonist in Cyberpunk 2077 will be a lot less pre-defined.
Of course, like other narrative-driven games that feature player-created characters, V will still have some personality traits that are outside of your control, even though most of the decisions will be made by the player.
