CYBERPUNK 2077 Developer On Games That Add Microtransactions After Launch: “I Think It’s A Bad Idea"
While it may be a widespread practice, CD Projekt Red's John Mamais has opened up on why he dislikes idea of adding microtransactions to a game after its been release. Hit the jump to for more information.
While recent push-back from fans and critics alike have seen some developers and publishers at least cut back on the amount of microtransactions in their games, they still remain a big feature in many games, with companies like Activision attempting to have the best of both worlds by adding microtransactions after a game's launch.
However, despite being a widespread practice in the gaming industry, there are still many developers that opt not to include such features, including CD Projekt Red who notably kept out microtransactions out of The Witcher 3 and their upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077.
Now, speaking with GameSpot, the head of CD Projekt RED’s Krakow office John Mamais has shared his opinion this common business decision.
"I think it’s a bad idea to do microtransactions after you release a game," Mamais explained. "It seems like it’s very profitable, though. It’s probably a hard decision for the guy that runs the business to decide if we should do it or not. But if everyone hates it, why would we do something like that and lose the goodwill of our customers?"
In short, while Mamais certainly sees the draw of including microtransactions, as they are often very profitable, he doesn't believe they are what fans ultimately want from games and has no desire to include them in his projects.
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently scheduled to launch on April 16, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
