After months of cryptic hints and rising fan speculation, Critical Role has officially revealed that their first-ever video game adaptation is in development and it’s being crafted by the well known and respected L.A.-based indie team AdHoc Studio. Check out the announcement down below:
The announcement, marks a major milestone for the hit tabletop brand as it ventures deeper into the world of interactive storytelling. The upcoming game will be set in Exandria, the rich and sprawling fantasy world created by Critical Role, and promises to be a narrative-driven title that may bridge the gap between the show's existing campaigns.
Interestingly, the partnership came about thanks to a bit of casting serendipity. Travis Willingham Critical Role cast member and CEO auditioned for AdHoc’s upcoming game Dispatch, and was so impressed by the studio’s creative vision that he asked if they could build something similar for Critical Role. The result? A creative partnership that could change how fans experience Exandria forever.
"It’s the kind of collaboration you hope for," said AdHoc CEO Michael Choung. "We’ve known the Critical Role team for years, so when we finally started kicking around ideas, it all just clicked."
AdHoc Studio is known for its expertise in narrative storytelling, with team members previously working on The Wolf Among Us, Telltale’s The Walking Dead, and other celebrated story-first games. Their background makes them a natural fit for translating the dialogue-rich, character-driven magic of Critical Role into a compelling gaming format.
The game will be set in Exandria, with the possibility of taking place between major Critical Role campaigns.
Characters from Vox Machina, Mighty Nein, and even the Hell’s Bells mini-campaign may appear. Which would be an amazing treat for fans of all the franchises.
It will be a story-driven, narrative-heavy experience, aligning with AdHoc’s pedigree and CR’s interactive storytelling roots.
Multiple projects are in the works between AdHoc and Critical Role, not just this one game in case you were wondering.
Though no release window, platforms, or gameplay footage has been shared yet, this announcement solidifies what many fans hoped for: that Critical Role’s expansion into gaming would be handled with the same care, creativity, and community first approach that made the original series a phenomenon.
For now, fans can rest easy Exandria is officially heading to consoles and PCs, and it’s in very good and capable hands.
