Video game movie adaptations are finally getting their chance to shine. After struggling to really breakthrough in the '90s and early 2000s thanks to a series of duds, it seems studios have finally cracked the code.
From HBO's The Last of Us series to Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie to Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, we're finally getting adaptations that are faithful to the source material. Or at least do a good job in sticking to the general premise of the video games that they are based on.
The latest example of an adaptation done right is Prime Vidoe's Fallout series, which has received glowing reviews for its first season.
On the heels of the series' success, many are ready to deem this the golden era of video game adaptations. But with so many stellar games to choose from, what would make for a good adaptation?
Windows Central recently sat down with Rod Fergusson, who now oversees the Diablo franchise, and asked about the prospect of a show based on the Diablo games. His response sounds promising!
"Yeah I definitely think it could work," he said. "That's one of the things I really liked about Diablo as an IP, is that it's got very relatable themes because it's The High Heavens versus The Burning Hells, and that idea of Good versus Evil. I think that's something that could translate very well to something like that."
Unfortunately, Fergusson had nothing official to announce. "You know, I wish I had something I could talk to you about today," he added. "But in terms of just the general idea, do I think it could work? I do."
Diablo is an action role-playing game developed by Blizzard that originally released in 1997. There have been four mainline installments in the series, which is set in the dark fantasy world of the Sanctuary. The games primarily focus on the ongoing conflict between the humans living in Sanctuary and the demon hordes who are led by Diablo. Aiding the humans at times are the angels, led by Archangel Tyrael.
The games are best known for their grinding gameplay loop, but Blizzard's cinematics and storytelling are top-notch. There's no doubt that Diablo would make for an entertaining series or movie, but for now, it sounds like there are no official plans in the works. But who knows, with how popular video game adaptations have become, it may only be a matter of time before we get an announcement.
