FINAL FANTASY XIV Director Naoki Yoshida Is Developing “Large-Scale” Next-Gen Video Game

While we know that Square Enix is developing at least one next-gen project right now (at Luminous Productions – and it won't be a Final Fantasy game), it looks like Final Fantasy IX: A Realm Reborn Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida is also wasting no time and already working on a new a “large-scale HD title,” "aimed at the next generation," most definitely PS5 and the Xbox One successor.

According to Square’s recruitment page, Square Enix BD5 has been renamed and is now called Square Enix's 3rd Development Division. Furthermore, Yoshida himself will serve as the newly formed developer’s general manager, as the studio is “shifting to a full-scale large-scale development phase.”

Back in February, Yoshida revealed that his Final Fantasy XVI would be a "straightforward fantasy" without "much machinery” in it. Yoshida is also helping Square Enix with the works on Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn’s upcoming expansion Shadowbringers, launching on June 28th.

To bring that ambitious "next-gen" concept to life, the Japanese developer is currently looking for people who "have a will to challenge the global industry," whatever it actually means. At the time of writing, Square Enix had not revealed any official plans to make a new Final Fantasy video game.
