Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent is the prequel to Square Enix's new role-playing series that was released for the Nintendo Switch in July of last year,
announced last month for iOS and Android devices.
It is worth mentioning that this game has been announced for Japan and Square Enix has not yet mentioned if the game will be localized in the West or not, although it is very likely that it will be, especially considering how popular the original
Octopath Traveler was upon release.
Much like the original
Octopath Traveler,
Conquerors of the Continent will also feature Square Enix's trademarked HD-2D graphics, which gives the games a unique 16-Bit art style based on the games of yesteryear, but with CG effects that make for quite the spectacle; especially during heated battles.
As recently revealed by Square Enix,
Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent will bring back the same battle mode seen in the first game, which allows players to boost their attacks in order to break the enemies' defenses in less turns; which is one of the things that added an extra layer to classic turn-based combat; that is, of course, if the weapon the character is using is one of the enemy's weaknesses.
What's probably something that players will think is a welcome change, is the fact that some of the strongest enemies out in the field will now be visible instead of them being found as a random encounter — which will make easier for players to decide if they really want to take their chances or do some leveling up before deciding to take these enemies on.
Apparently, NPCs will now join you regardless of the character the player has selected. This will be done in the same way as before, via Path Actions, but it will not be restricted to some of the characters like in the first game.
The biggest change in regards to the Nintendo Switch version of the game is the fact that players will now see the story through the eyes of the character they choose at the beginning. Once players choose Wealth, Power, or Glory, they'll be able to pick other characters that they didn't select at the beginning.
In the original game, all players needed to do was go through the first Chapter of one character, and then all they needed to do in order to get another character was simply go to the next town and they'd automatically be given the chance to play as this new traveler.
