Saying that
Fallout 76 is a pretty controversial would be an understatement. While some players have been enjoying Bethesda Softworks' latest offering, a big group of vocal players has been complaining and poking fun at the title since its November release, as the multiplayer-only game features countless systemic designs that never seem to work together and regularly contradict themselves even now.
According to Obsidian Entertainment’s CEO Feargus Urquhart, bashing Bethesda has to stop, as it brings nothing new or fruitful to the table. Urquhart also thinks that using their
The Outer Worlds as a pretext to attack Bethesda and
Fallout 76 is unacceptable. "
People even said things about our trailer: 'Oh man, just slamming it home to Bethesda!' because we said the original creators of Fallout and makers of Fallout: New Vegas," the CEO explained. "
We have storyboards from July that said that. I have no ill will for Bethesda, I love playing Fallout games... We’re not fighting for the same dollars."
"
This isn’t meant to be negative – it can probably be taken as negative. We really enjoyed making Fallout: New Vegas and people really enjoy Fallout: New Vegas," Urquhart continued. "
Bethesda is looking to take the Fallout brand in a different direction. There's nothing right or wrong about that. That’s their choice. They own it, they get to do what they want with it. But in our mind, there are people that enjoy where Fallout was. That is what we wanted to do with The Outer Worlds, to give people that. And you know what? Maybe that’s a bad decision from the standpoint of the number of people that will buy it. I don’t know… People seem to really enjoy what Fallout: New Vegas was, so let's give them an experience that's as similar as we can to that," the CEO concluded.
Obsidian is not hiding the fact that
The Outer Worlds doesn't have a Bethesda budget. While their next game won't be as vast and rich as
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt or
Fallout: New Vegas, it has something way more important: a clear sense of direction. In
TOW, your avatar awakes from hibernation on a ship that was lost in transit to the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, and it's up to you to find your purpose in this colorful, seemingly abandoned world – and maybe even try to save it.
In The Outer Worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to Halcyon, the furthest colony from Earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
The Outer Worlds will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.
