Sega has had an interesting journey with their blue hedgehog, to say the least. Sonic started as a character to compete with Nintendo's very own Mario, back in 1990. Sonic's first appearance was in
Sonic the Hedgehog, released for the Mega Drive(Genesis) in 1991 and saw two sequels in the form of
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and
Sonic the Hedgehog 3(
Sonic & Knuckles).
A
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 game was released in 2010, over 15 years after
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had come out and it was considered a disappointment over all, getting mixed to negative reviews. This because the game just didn't really feel like a Sonic game, and also because it was split into two episodes, which didn't bode well with players.
In terms of Sonic games, the Genesis era is where most people look when trying to define what is it that makes a Sonic game, well...a Sonic game, which is why a lot of people were thrilled when
Sonic Mania was first announced, especially because it saw the game go back to its roots in terms of graphics, music, level design and gameplay.
All that hype for
Sonic Mania has paid off, since the game was everything players have been wanting for decades. The game is also about to get an expansion in the form of
Sonic Mania Plus, which will come out sometime in Summer of this year in physical form or DLC for the ones that already own
Sonic Mania.
And today, we've got information that
Sonic Mania has sold 1 million units worldwide. The news comes from
Famitsu, who reported it in this week's issue. They also mention that in this week's issue(available on the 26th) they'll delve a bit more on the PLUS part of the game.
This is definitely great news, especially because it helps Sega figure out what to do next with the franchise after the fiasco that was Sonic Forces. Hopefully
Sonic Mania Plus will keep everything on the right track and help Sega sell even more units now that the games are getting physical releases for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC.
