It's well known that Nintendo is not afraid of investing in new brands and IPs. This strategy clearly paid off, as Nintendo Switch matches Playstation 4's sales during the same period of time. This year, 43% of all Nintendo's games were new, fresh projects like
Arms, Kirby Battle Royale or
Ever Oasis. Sony is not lagging behind, as their 2017 catalogue contained 41% of the new IPs. The biggest one was arguably
Horizon: Zero Dawn, but the publisher also launched a lot of smaller titles under the PlayLink initiative.
The third spot belongs to Ubisoft. Thanks to games like
For Honor and indie-like Ubisoft Reflection's projects (
Atomega, Ode) they managed to achieve the 27% score. Sadly, that's it for the fresh The Big Six's brands. EA, Microsoft and Activison didn't publish a single game that wasn't a continuation or a spin-off of their old brands.
Here's another bummer. If you think that the lack of the innovation was reflected in sales, you're wrong. According to Newzoo 16,8% of the sold physical copies in the UK comes from Electronic Arts and Activison is closely second with 15,6%.
