DC FanDome was full of all sorts of exciting Batman announcements this weekend from movie trailers to game reveals. Following the teaser earlier this month, the Batman: Arkham series developer Rocksteady Studios officially unveiled its next project, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
The upcoming game is described as a "genre-bending action-adventure shooter" where players take on the role of DC Super-Villains Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark. The trailer is unfortunately entirely cinematic, but Rocksteady teased "character-drive story gameplay with third-person shooter action." A good portion of the trailer is used to set up each of the wise-cracking characters before getting into the action.
While no gameplay is shown, the trailer could offer some insight into how each character's unique abilities and weaponry will translate into actual gameplay mechanics. Harley Quinn, for instance, pulls off some impressive moves with her signature bat, while Captain Boomerang utilizes his superspeed while throwing his boomerangs. Deadshot has an arsenal of weaponry while King Shark is armed with a mini-gun. According to Rocksteady, each character will have their own unique moveset, weapons to customize, skills to master and enhanced traversal abilities.
These traversal abilities will be useful in exploring the open-world of Metropolis. As the four members of Amanda Waller's infamous Task Force X, the Suicide Squad must save the world and take on some mighty strong DC Heroes, including Superman, who doesn't quite appear to be his normal self.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League can be played solo or with up to four plays in online co-op. If played solo, players will be able to switch between each of the characters at will.
The announcement of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League comes at an interesting time as DC currently has a new Suicide Squad movie in producted directed by James Gunn. However, the two projects are not at all related besides in name.
“We’re introducing an original take on the Suicide Squad that combines the rich, character-driven storytelling Rocksteady is known for with innovative gameplay features to create a unique gaming experience," said Sefton Hill, Creative Director and co-founder of Rocksteady Studios.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is due out in 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
