About Warhammer 40K

Warhammer 40,000, often abbreviated as "Warhammer 40K" or simply "40K", is a tabletop miniature wargame produced by the British gaming company Games Workshop.

First introduced in 1987, it has since become one of the most popular miniature wargames in the world. The game is set in a dystopian science-fantasy universe that is characterized by a dark, gothic aesthetic, and it is known for its elaborate lore and the tagline "In the far future, there is only war."

The Warhammer 40,000 universe is set in the distant future, where a stagnating human civilization is beset on all sides by hostile aliens and supernatural creatures. Humanity's empire, the Imperium of Man, is a vast, interstellar theocracy, ruled over by the God-Emperor, who, although biologically immortal, has been incapacitated and interred within the Golden Throne on Terra (Earth) for millennia.

The game's universe includes a variety of factions, each with its own backstory, motivations, and aesthetics. Some of these factions include:

  • The Imperium of Man: The most prominent human faction, including the Space Marines (genetically modified super-soldiers), the Imperial Guard (the vast armies of humanity), and the Inquisition (keepers of the faith and hunters of heresy).
  • Chaos: Former humans and Space Marines who have given themselves over to the service of the Chaos Gods, embodying the dark reflection of human nature and the Imperium.
  • Eldar (Aeldari): An ancient and highly psychic alien race with various sub-factions such as Craftworlders, Drukhari (Dark Eldar), and Harlequins.
  • Orks: A warlike, green-skinned alien race with a penchant for casual violence and crude technology.
  • Tyranids: A seemingly unending swarm of bio-engineered creatures from outside the galaxy that consume all biomatter in their path.
  • Necrons: An ancient race of skeletal robots who once ruled the galaxy and have awoken from their slumber to reclaim it.
  • Tau: A relatively young and technologically advanced race that seeks to expand their empire and bring other species into their fold through the philosophy they call the "Greater Good."

Players of Warhammer 40K collect and paint individual 28 mm scale miniature figures that represent soldiers, creatures, and vehicles of war. These miniatures are used to enact battles on a tabletop, with players using rulers to measure distances and dice to resolve combat. The rules of the game are published in a series of books and supplements, which describe how units move, shoot, and engage in close-quarters combat.

Over the years, Warhammer 40K has expanded through dozens of books, including rulebooks, campaign supplements, and novels. The game has spawned a rich lore, detailing the universe's history, factions, and characters, contributing to its depth and complexity. The narrative of "Warhammer 40K" is continuously evolving, with new storylines and characters being introduced.

The game has a strong and dedicated fanbase, with communities forming in local gaming stores, clubs, and online forums. Games Workshop supports the community through organized events, tournaments, and narrative campaigns. Moreover, the Warhammer 40K universe has been adapted into various other media, including video games, novels, and comics, which has helped to broaden its appeal beyond tabletop gamers.

Warhammer 40,000 is more than just a game; it's a hobby encompassing the collection, painting, and gaming with miniatures, as well as engaging with a rich narrative universe. Its enduring popularity is a testament to the depth of its world-building and the passion of its community.
