Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad, recently spoke to Variety to celebrate Hogwarts Legacy selling over 22 million copies by the end of 2023.
Haddad began the interview by highlighting the success of the Harry Potter game, stating, "It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story. And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks."
However, it was later confirmed that in addition to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, MultiVersus and a single-player action Wonder Woman game from Monolith, WB Games is also working on tie-in video games for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU.
Haddad stated, "A very consistent message coming from the executive layer of Warner Bros. Discovery is the importance of franchises. There’s a unique and important role games have in keeping our franchises relevant, resonant and exciting because there’s plenty of fans and plenty of people consuming content where games are their starting point, it’s their preferred form of content.”
This is the first confirmation from the video game side of Warner Bros. that they're on board with Gunn's ambitious plan to create a cinematic universe that crosses all mediums.
When first unveiling the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate, Gunn stated, "What we're doing with the DCU is we're having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within the same universe. We're going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this, as well as in other things, some of which we've already cast."
Haddad obviously declined to go into detail on the specifics of what DCU video games are currently in development but there's definitely a ton of possibilities given the diverse Chapter 1 slate.
Could there be a tie-in Superman: Legacy game secretly in development that will see the cast reprise their roles? A third-person Peacemaker shooter with John Cena providing the voice and motion capture would also draw a lot of interest from gamers and comic book readers, alike.
Stay tuned to Gamefragger for future updates as Gunn is likely to start receiving a ton of questions on social media about potential tie-in games and there's also a chance he might respond.
