Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer is a collaboration between Nintendo and Brace Yourself Games, which will see characters from
The Legend of Zelda series crossing over with the characters and gameplay mechanics seen in
Crypt of the Necrodancer; like the name very appropriately suggests.
In a recent interview with
4Gamer, the developers at Brace Yourself Games revealed some very interesting details about this rather unusual crossover, including what's in the game in terms of
The Legend of Zelda lore, the new visual style for Crypt of the Necrodancer, gameplay mechanics, and this new game's music.
According to Oliver Trujillo — Lead Programmer for the game — Nintendo wanted
Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer to keep all of the lore from
The Legend of Zelda series' untouched.
"
They had quite a hand in supervising the appearance of story details for the Triforce. They emphasized that they wanted the series’ lore and mysteriousness to stay intact even in this title," explained Trujillo as he then commented on the game's visual style and how it compares to the original
Crypt of the Necrodancer.
"
The art team have worked incredibly hard, and spent a long time on the making of it. Apart from the clear pixel sprites, character and background tiles have been made to be more distinct and easier to tell apart, so there has been a good effect on the gameplay as well."
Ryan Clark — Brace Yourself Games Founder — interjects, adding a bit more of information on what they've changed in terms of character sprites and the overall quality of these.
"
For NecroDancer, we only had one graphics artist, but this time we have four. In the last game, players only had one forward-facing sprite, but this time there are sprites for four directions. The quality of the sprites has increased of course, but these sorts of sprites has also been increased as well."
When it comes to the amount of tracks from
The Legend of Zelda series used in
Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer, Trujillo remains somewhat tight-lipped, although he does tell us that the soundtrack focuses mainly on
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past; something that will make fans of the series very excited.
"
I can’t give a specific number, but I’d just like to say that there are a lot. With particular focus on A Link to the Past, many songs from across the series will show up."
Clark mentions that the gameplay in Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer has not really been changed when compared to Crypt of the Necrodancer, but there are some new things that have been added, which promise to give the game some new layers
"While the system of moving to the beat hasn’t changed, the feel of the game has changed. For example, this game has included the concept of differences in elevation, and you can utilize that in combat."
Lastly, Trujillo reveals that this new game, being a proper The Legend of Zelda crossover title, will still feature a bunch of core elements from Nintendo's critically acclaimed series; so players should expect to find puzzles and other staples to the series in Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer.
"Also, when you speak of the Zelda series, puzzle solving is one of the main features, and this game also includes puzzle solving elements."
Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer still doesn't have an official release date, but we do know that it will be releasing, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, at some point this June.
As Link — or even as Princess Zelda — you’ll explore the randomly generated overworld and dungeons on a quest to save Hyrule. Every beat of each remixed, The Legend of Zelda tune is a chance to move, attack, defend, and more, so stay one step ahead of each enemy and boss…or face the music.
Cadence of Hyrule - Crypt of the Necrodancer is expected to release for the Nintendo Switch in June.
