The Nintendo Switch Online service was launched on the 18th of September, getting a mixed to negative reception due to the lack of content it featured. Most users have complained about the Nintendo Entertainment System feature not being what it should be; featuring the same old NES titles players have been playing for over 30 years.
While the complaints are not unjustified, Nintendo seems to have swept them under the rug and keep uploading the same NES titles instead of giving in to the demands of the users. At least until now, since a new Q & A briefing suggests that Nintendo may be wanting to boost the service's appeal in the coming years.
According to this official Q & A, Shuntaro Furukawa, the recently appointed president of Nintendo, revealed that the Nintendo Switch Online service has had a good launch but they are still working on boosting its appeal for the consumer.
"
We think Nintendo Switch Online had a good launch, but the service has only just begun, so we have no plans to disclose any current subscriber ratios or number of subscribers at this time. Our objective for launching the service is to bring "More Games. More Features. More Fun." to Nintendo Switch",explained Furukawa by also adding that their focus is on boosting the appeal of the Nintendo Switch Online Service.
"
Our focus at this point is on boosting the appeal of the service. We need to further enhance the content of the service for the subscriber base to reach a certain size, so that is what we're working on, with the understanding that the time it will take to do so will be measured in years".
While this may sound reassuring, it may not bode well for fans who still wish Nintendo wouldn't take years to begin delivering the content that, arguably, should've been available at launch. The Nintendo Switch Online service brings some interesting features like the Nintendo Entertainment System, Save Data Cloud Backup, and Online play, but lacks a proper Virtual Console service that could easily win over longtime fans of The Big N. We'll just have to wait and see what Nintendo has up their sleeve, and hopefully they'll deliver sooner than later.
