Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 is rumored to be Gaming Legends inspired and SEGA has confirmed one of its most iconic characters will be involved in the upcoming season.
On social media, the official Sonic the Hedgehog channels shared a video, teasing: "This new "Fortnite" Zone feels oddly familiar." The footage shows an area clearly inspired by Sonic's Green Hill Zone, along with Peely dashing through it at Sonic-legel speed.
At the end we see what looks like Sonic curled in his blue ball, performing the full 360 degree loop-de-loop.
This pretty much confirms Sonic will be involved in the upcoming season of Fortnite in at least some way. It's still unclear if Sonic himself will be a playable character in the game. I imagine it would feel a little weird to see him wielding in assault rifle in battle royale, even if it is a cartoonish-looking game.
That said, we have seen some pretty strange collaborations in the past, so maybe Epic and SEGA have figured out a way to make it work. The more likely scenario is a Sonic-like loadout or item that grants players super speed. And, of course, the Green Hills-inspired zone.
The video also shows ring collecting. Will coins or rings play some sort of role in the upcoming season or was the video just a nod to the Sonic the Hedgehog games?
Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 is slated to go live on August 14, so we'll likely continue to see publishers tease their collaborations for it. There have been rumors that Override will also crossover with other iconic video game franchises, including Tetris, Kingdom Hearts, and Persona.
Now obviously not all of these franchises will be featured in the season's Battle Pass. It'll probably include two or three characters with the rest introduced throughout the season as Item Shop cosmetics.
Epic has also confirmed that Sprites will return next season. The developer has already revealed the first batch of Sprites: the five winners of this season's "Design-A-Sprite" contest which involved the community submitting their own ideas for the adorable collectible creatres.
This season saw Sprites inspired by John Wick, Batman, and Mr. Peanut. If Sonic isn't a playable character, it's possible he will be featured as a Sprite that you can collect and level up. Maybe the Sprite will grant increased movement speed as you level it up.
