We could almost write a book with all of the rumours about a new Metroid game being currently in development at Nintendo. Sure, we do know that Metroid Prime 4 is being developed by Retro Studios, but other rumours suggest that Metroid Prime Trilogy would release for the Nintendo Switch before Metroid Prime 4.
Earlier this week, a rumour was doing the rounds and suggesting that Metroid Prime Trilogy was not only going to be announced soon, but that it would also be releasing as soon as the 19th of June. The information actually came from a Swedish retailer that listed the game on its official website and quickly removed it.
Now it seems that even Nintendo is adding fuel to the rumours, but we need to provide a little bit of context for this one.
A few weeks ago, Nintendo surprised fans of the Paper Mario series by announcing Paper Mario: The Origami King, and revealing that the game will launch on the 17th of July.
The tease itself came in the form of the announcement trailer's final scene, in which Mario is seen wearing a giant Samus Aran helmet; you know, Samus Aran as in thename of the heroine from the Metroid series.
Nintendo then doubled down on the tease, posting a tweet on social media about Paper Mario: The Origami King, and specifically opting to share the "Metroid scene" seen at the end of the trailer.
While this could well be Nintendo's PR having fun on Twitter, The Big N are very careful to not share misinformation like that lightly, which has led fans to believe that a Metroid series-related announcement is anything but confirmed at this point.
Nintendo has not revealed whether they will be streaming any special presentation this month, but the last Nintendo Direct Mini was released completely unannounced, and they could do this again; finally revealing that Metroid Prime Trilogy that has been rumoured for so long. Fingers crossed.
