The
Nintendo Switch Online service was launched back in September of last year; bringing with it some features that allowed subscribers to play their games online, save data on the cloud, and even play some classic NES titles.
While Nintendo did offer NES games from the beginning, subscribers have been disappointed by the lack or kind of titles that Nintendo had made available — especially considering that they would only release two or three games on a monthly basis; games that, more ofthen than not, weren't even heavy hitters.
During this week's Nintendo Direct presentation,
Nintendo revealed that they would finally be adding SNES games via the brand-new Super Nintendo Entertainment System app; making the app available just yesterday and offering 20 classic Super Nintendo games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to play at their leisure.
Recently, Nintendo has also revealed that the release schedule for both Nintendo and Super Nintendo games will not follow the monthly schedule, although they did promise that more games will, indeed, be added in the future.
According to a Nintendo representative, in an email sent to Business Insider, "
more NES games will be added in the future, but those releases will not adhere to a regular schedule."
This will probably follow a similar release schedule to the one seen on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U eShop; where a bunch of titles would just appear every now and then for players to purchase.
Of course, both NES and SNES titles are free-ish for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, since subscribing to the service grants them access to these games; with the yearly cost of the subscritpion being a mere $19.99 USD.
The Nintendo representative also said that "
more Super NES games will be added after launch, but those releases will not adhere to a regular schedule," so fans will just have to wait until Nintendo announces these upcoming titles — which may or may not be released every month; at least from now on.
With a Nintendo Switch Online* membership, you’ll get access to online play in compatible games, a growing catalog of classic NES™ titles with newly added online play, and cloud backup for your save data in compatible games.
Nintendo Switch Online is currently available.
