Well, what do you know? The rumours about Nintendo working on a Super Mario Bros. 3D collection were true, as the Tokyo-based company has officially announced Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch, although it isn't quite what the rumours had us believe.
First things first, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is expected to release for the Nintendo Switch on Friday the 18th of September, and it is including the all-time classic Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy; all of which featuring HD visuals.
Rumours initially revealed that this collection would've included both titles in the Super Mario Galaxy series, but this is definitely not the case. It was also believed that these games would be remastered version of the aforementioned titles, but we've also learnt that this wasn't accurate.
Here's where things get slightly more complicated, though, as Nintendo has also revealed that Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a limited release, and that the game will be available from the 18th of September until the end of March in 2021; what this exactly means, however, is anybody's guess, since Nintendo didn't go into specifics.
My guess is that Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be released for a limited time as a bundle, and Nintendo will later sell these games separately. The trailer also confirms that the collection will get a physical release, so maybe that's the limited release they're talking about.
Perhaps Nintendo is only releasing the game physically for a limited time and, after March of next year, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will only be available on the Nintendo Switch eShop; again, this is anybody's guess. This is still great news for fans of the beloved, and heroic plumber.
