SUPER MARIO BROS. 35: Not A Week After Its Release, And The Battle Royale Title Is Already Being Hacked

Super Mario Bros. 35 is one of the many titles that Nintendo has announced for Mario's 35th anniversary, and is Nintendo's take on the popular battle royale genre — which sees players playing through the levels in the first Super Mario Bros., but against 34 other opponents.

The game was actually released on Thursday the 1st of October and will be available, for a liited time, until Wendesday the 31st of March. It is also worth noting that the game is technically free(ish), as it is available to download, completely free of charge, for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

In Super Mario Bros. 35, players will be running and jumping through any of the levels in the original Super Mario Bros. non-stop until they are eliminated. In order to stay in the race, players need to collect coins and defeat as many enemies as possible.

Defeating enemies will not only add some extra seconds to the timer, but also allows players to "attack" their opponents, as each enemy they defeat will be sent to another player's courses in real time. Coins, on the other hand, give players access to the Item Roulette, which will help them with useful items that can make running through the game's courses a breeze.

Unfortunately, hackers have already managed to make the experience miserable for everyone, as they have figured out a way to get an infinite number of coins that make it impossible for players to keep up with the game's near infinite number of enemies.

While coins don't necessarily make hackers better players, it is frustrating to see them have infinite access to items that make levels easier to complete by defeating enemies that extend the time left. Interestingly enough, hackers dying in the game will boost the winner's score, so there's that.

Polygon has reached out to Nintendo to know whether the developer will be taking action against those who have hacked Super Mario Bros. 35, but they still hven't heard back from them, so we'll have to wait a little bit longer for an update on the matter.

Below you can see an example of what the Ranking board looks like when players come across these hackers, and below that you can see a short clip that will give you a pretty good idea of how hectic things can get when you're amongt the last players standing in Super Mario Bros. 35.

Each player is given the same timed stage, but you must defeat enemies to earn extra time and attack your opponents. Don’t forget to pick up some coins on your way—they can be used to get in-game items like power-ups. With speed, skill, and strategy, you could be the last Mario standing.

Super Mario Bros. 35 will be available for the Nintendo Switch from Thursday the 1st of October until Wednesday the 31st of March, 2021.
