While the news of a Super Mario Bros. film from Illumination has been known for some time now, many believed that this could be the start of something even more significant for the world of Nintendo. With Universal Studios partnering with the game company to bring a theme park that places guests into the world of their favorite games, it seems like something big is truly on the horizon.
Over this past year, with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the recent need for people to stay inside due to COVID-19, the company has been pulling in fantastic sales numbers that stand to show Nintendo may be one of the most profitable companies this year!
During a recent Corporate Management Policy Briefing with the companies investors, it was explained that the company might be working on future plans beyond the Super Mario film, stating, "increase the number of people who have access to [Nintendo] IP" by "continuing to invest in ... entertainment expansion initiatives". This means that there is an opportunity for more branching of these game properties into other mediums, further bolstered by the statement "visual content expansion initiatives may not be limited to film."
Where this leads Nintendo's entertainment desires, at this point, is anyone's guess. Could TV shows or maybe even a shared canon, like Star Wars? Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments below!
