Nintendo just streamed a new Direct that focused entirely on the upcoming
Super Mario Maker 2, the sequel to the Nintendo Wii U's acclaimed
Super Mario Maker, and the new game is jam-packed with new features that will make fans of the original game very excited.
First things first, while
Super Mario Maker 2 doesn't require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, players will not be able to share levels or play levels made by other players. Given that the original
Super Mario Maker relied almost in its entirety on online gameplay, this was to be expected.
Players who still don't have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription can still play over 100 Nintendo-made levels that
Super Mario Maker 2 will be including, although the subscription is pretty much required to enjoy the game at its fullest. Now onto the game, as there is a lot to go over in regards to the new featuresw that Nintendo has added in
Super Mario Maker 2.
One of the things that Nintendo has added to the game are new water areas that can be added to any stage, and players will be able to set different water levels, different speeds, and even choose other liquids like lava or poison to make the stages even more difficult for others.
Super Mario Maker 2 is also introducing vertical sub-areas, which is one thing that will give players the chance to make some levels that are more akin to
Super Mario Bros. 2, while also adding some verticality to the levels they create instead of just creating horizontal levels like in the previous game.
Players will also be able to have someone create levels with them, as there is now a Co-op level-making feature that will see players being joined by friends at any time and get some help while making their levels.
Super Mario Maker 2 is also introducing new course themes such as Desert, Snow, Forest, and Sky, each with unique new music tracks composed by legendary composer Koji Kondo; making the game already worth buying for the music alone. Day and Night levels are also a new thing, with some items and enemies even behaving differently depending on whether it's day or night.
As if this wasn't enough, Nintendo has also added a new Story Mode to the game, which will have players taking the role of Mario and helping rebuild Princess Peach's castle.
What's probably the biggest inclusion in
Super Mario Maker 2 is the new
Super Mario 3D World Game Style, which brings a bunch of new items for players to make unique levels that cannot be made using other Game Styles; not to mention that the Cat suit will also be available.
Players who have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will also be able to play levels in Course Mode with up to 4 other players, and even try to beat levels in VS mode. Depending on the situation, they may want to finish the level faster than the other players, or work together to fight bosses.
