Ever since Nintendo announced that a sequel to the critically acclaimed
Super Mario Maker was making its way into the Nintendo Switch, fans of the
Super Mario Bros. series have been eagerly anticipating to know more about it.
Nintendo released a
Super Mario Maker 2 Direct a couple of weeks ago, revealing a bunch of interesting details about the game, the new courses, and options that it will be featuring. What they didn't mention, however, is that players will not be able to play with their friends online; something that is not boding well with fans at all.
According to a Nintendo Treehouse representative,
Super Mario Maker 2 will feature multiplayer, but it will not allow players to play with their friends online; only allowing for local gameplay. The only way that players will have to play with their friends is by using one Nintendo Switch or by connecting their Nintendo Switch with their friends' consoles for local wireless play.
As revealed by the source, Nintendo's reason behind this decision lies within the fact that playing online with friends could end up affecting competitive matchmaking in a negative way; something that could be easily fixed by featuring online leaderboards and multiplayer gameplay as separate game modes.
Nintendo keeps proving us that they don't know how to handle online features. Hopefully they'll add online multiplayer with friends in future updates, but history tells us that Nintendo doesn't add things just because fans ask for them, so we'll have to keep our fingers crossed for them to address this appropriately.
In this new game, a sequel to the original Wii U™ game, players can create the Super Mario courses of their dreams, with access to even more tools, items and features, including the new ability to create slopes for the first time.
Super Mario Maker 2 will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on the 28th of June.
