Fans of the
Super Smash Bros. series have often complained about the games featuring way too many sword wielders; particularly those that come from the
Fire Emblem series of tactical role-playing games. The
Fire Emblem series has been represented since
Super Smash Bros. Melee came out in the early 90s, but things got a bit out of hand when
Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U released back in 2014.
Since
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate — the latest entry in the long-running series — features every character in the series' history, there are currently a total of eight characters from the
Fire Emblem series, which is only one less characters than the Super Mario Bros. series; not to mention that there are other sword wielders like
The Legend of Zelda's Link and
Kid Icarus' Pit.
When
Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed that the final Challenger Pack in the
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighters Pass was another Fire Emblem character, fans of the series were pretty disappointed and voiced their discontent.
In his weekly column on Famitsu magazine, Masahiro Sakurai has finally admitted that there are way too many sword wielders in
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but he does reveal that he brings in tactics that are exclusive to each fighter; all of this in order to keep them different from one another.
Thanks to the people over at
Nintendo Everything we have a handy summary of every topic Masahiro Sakurai touched on in his weekly column:
– The new fighters weren’t Sakurai’s own favorites
– Once again, Nintendo was behind those choices
– This time Sakurai is bringing the experience to play as the protagonist of a game you can play right now right away
– He tried to start working on a title where the original game was still in development
– Sakurai says he understands well that there are too many Fire Emblem characters
– Also understands that there are too many sword users
– It has been decided like that so he just proceeds as-is
– There are other things Sakurai has to think about more
– Since there are so many sword users, he brings in tactic exclusive to each fighter
– The 3 Hero Relics owned by the three house leaders were being included in move inputs
