When Nintendo announced
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake, everyone was legfitimately surprised — since there was no indication, leak, or rumor pointing to Nintendo working on a remake for one of their most critically acclaimed titles in
The Legend of Zelda series.
It turns out, however, that this remake was actually teased — albeit with a very obscure reference — by
The Legend of Zelda series Producer Eiji Aonuma, which was actually revealed during an interview with EDGE magazine all the way back in 2016.
"
Actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they're also telling me to make more Zelda games. I can't really share much; I'm not sure I'm allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That's all I’ll say," is what Aonuma said in during said interview three years ago.
The keyword here is "thief", and the reference is as obscure as it can be since, in
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Link can enter the Town Tool Shop, distract the shopkeeper, and steal items — which is something that has only been possible to do in this game and has been confirmed to be part of the remake, as well.
Aonuma was asked, in this month's issue of EDGE magazine, if he had been teasing
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening before, and Aonuma simply laughed it off before admitting that he had, indeed, teased the remake before.
Originally released for the Game Boy™ system more than 25 years ago, one of the most beloved games in the Legend of Zelda series returns. In this modern re-imagining, players once again return to the mysterious island of Koholint to guide Link on a perilous adventure.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening will be available for the Nintendo Switch on the 20th of September.
