In
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, the player embarks on a dangerous journey across the mountains and the seas of Auroa, a fictional archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. While the environment will be beautiful, you probably won't have time to sightsee much, as the paradise has been attacked by mercenaries who will stop at nothing to use its resources (mostly drones created by the mysterious Skell Technology) and kill those who wronged the group's deadly leader, ex-Ghost Cole D. Walker.
In a recent interview with GameSpot, the game's Lead Developer Sebastien Le revealed that the team is doing their very best to avoid making any strong (and therefore controversial) political messages.
"
We're creating a game here, we're not trying to make political statements in our games," Le explained. "
We've rooted ourselves in reality, and you'll get what you get out of your playthrough--everybody will get something different out of their experience. The story might make you see different situations, but we're not trying to guide anybody or to make any sorts of statements."
"It's a 'What if?' scenario, it's Tom Clancy, it's purely fictional," Le concluded. According to Community Developer Laura Cordrey, Ubisoft, as a global studio, is "
always inspired by what's happening around us, and it's always our goal to stay authentic ... but the story does remain fictional."
Given that a vocal group of players have been complaining about
Far Cry 5 and
The Division 2 not being openly political, it's rather safe to say that those who would like to hear what the developers behind
Breakpoint have to say about the technological race in the Silicon Valley will likely be disappointed.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is a military shooter set in a diverse, hostile, and mysterious open world that you can play entirely solo or in four-player co-op. Injured, without support, and hunted down by ex-Ghosts, you must fight to survive while lost in Auroa. Choose the right alliances and decide how to take down your toughest enemy.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 4, 2019.
