Happy Mario Day! In celebration of it being March 10, (MAR10), LEGO has unveiled three new Super Mario sets along with plans to introduce new sets based on the Mario Kart video game franchise.
The three sets were revealed via a LEGO Super Mario Day stream.
The first was the Bowser Express Train Set. Inspired by Super Mario 3D World's World Bowser Train-The Bowser Express, the set features a main locomotive, two carriages and a hand car in the back. It also comes with two train stations, one that represents Peach's Castle in the Mushroom Kingdom and the other representing Bowser's Castle.
The second set is King Boo's Haunted Mansion. This is an adventure playset that recreates King Boo's haunted mansion and features all sorts of spooky interactive secrets such as an elevating sofa and a bookcase with a key-reveal function.
The third set revealed is the Battle with Roy at Peach's Castle set. This is another interactive playset specifically designed with "play" in mind. The castle not only opens up for but also features collapsing walls, a tower, a catapult, a rotating throne and more. The walls are made so that they can easily be rebuilt following a collapse under siege.
Of course, the highlight of the stream came at the very end — plans to release LEGO Mario Kart sets. Not much is known about these sets, which are coming in 2025, other than they will be inspired by Nintendo's kart racing spin-off franchise.
While there are plenty of traditional Super Mario LEGO sets, none are based on the Mario Kart series — at least for now. In 2025, we'll hopefully be getting new sets featuring characters and courses from the popular racing franchise.
It's also unclear which of the Mario Kart games these sets will be based on. The series has evolved quite a bit since it debuted on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. Will the sets be based on the Nintendo 64 classic, Mario Kart 64, which to this day is considered one of the best in the franchise? Or will the sets take after something more modern like Mario Kart Deluxe 8 for Nintendo Switch? Will we get sets that let you build the actual courses, like Rainbow Road or Electrodome?
We've got lots of questions, but they probably won't be answered for quite some time. The LEGO Mario Kart sets are coming until 2025. In the meantime, these three new sets will arrive on August 1, 2024.
